Fun Exercise Activities to Motivate Even the Worst Couch Potato
When it comes to exercise, we all face that epic battle between the mind and the will. We know that being active is a key to staying healthy. Exercising regularly is one of the best things we can do for ourselves - it keeps our bones and muscles strong (including our heart!) and can prevent a wide variety of potential health issues. But no one wants to wake up earlier than they have to in order to workout and at the end of a long workday, the last thing anyone wants to do is go out for a run! With such busy schedules during the day and the strong temptation to simply become couch potatoes in the evenings, how can we be motivated to get the exercise we need?

Try These Fun Exercise Activities
Activity #1: Train for a mud run!
“Mud runs” or obstacle runs such as the Warrior Dash, the Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, the Dirty Girl Mud Run or the Color Run are growing in popularity in major cities all over the U.S. These events provide individuals or groups the opportunity to participate in a running event that is challenging, but fun at the same time. While the average person may not ever be interested in running a marathon, most people like the idea of training for an event like a mud run, where they know they’ll have a blast with their friends and make a mess in the process! Events like this are certainly among the most fun exercise activities, but the best part is that they will motivate you to get out and do some training beforehand as well.
Activity #2: Join a Zumba class!
Zumba is a dance/aerobic activity that has Columbian origins and always proves to be a great workout and a good time! Many gyms and YMCAs are now offering classes for Zumba and while the participants smile and laugh the whole way through, the 60 minutes flies by and they work up a sweat in the process. Let the music lead you as you trick your body into working hard with fun exercise activities such as Zumba classes.
Activity #3: Start a pedometer walking challenge!
Running and dancing may be a little outside of your comfort zone and that’s ok! Even walking is a great way to get some exercise throughout your week. However, if walking is just another thing on your to-do list, you will never be really motivated to get out and do it. To give yourself some incentive, get a pedometer and track your miles! You can even find software or smart phone apps that will allow you to map out your walk and track your progress. Some workplaces offer wellness programs, including pedometer programs, to encourage employees to get regular exercise. Ask whether your company offer this program and if they don’t, make a recommendation that they check out the opportunity!
